Mission

Greening Haiti Fund aims to restore the self-sufficiency of the rural community of Fond-des-Blancs, Haiti, by reversing deforestation and soil depletion through environmental education, soil revitalization, and tree planting.

Our long-term goal is to demonstrate the feasibility of making Haiti green again, and provide a model for other communities to replicate.

Approach

Our partners are crucial to the ongoing progress of our operations.

Greening Haiti Fund brings together local and foreign experts to implement our three-pronged approach of Environmental Education, Soil Revitalization and Tree Planting.

Environmental Education

  • Formal and informal class courses for 7th and 8th grade schoolchildren through GHF Climate Curriculum lays the intellectual agricultural foundation for present and future generations

  • Community involvement throughout the entire process of preparing the land and planting trees builds knowledge and confidence

  • Lectures and videos for adults supported by hands-on training in environmentally-sustainable agricultural practices encourages best practices throughout the community

  • Demonstration seed beds in our local nursery educate residents to the application and efficacy of soil amendments

Soil Revitalization

  • Soil enrichment programs are taught and implemented using compost and rabbit manure

  • Soil erosion is prevented short-term by planting fast-growing grasses or corn and long-term by planting purpose-specific varieties of trees

  • Planting trees for carbon sequestration in the soil, which improves soil structure and fertility, is emphasized to residents

Tree Planting

  • Our custom-built tree nursery provides shelter to grow seedlings of intentionally selected, mainly native, tree varieties

    • Posterity trees, never to be cut, to provide shade for other crops

    • Fruit trees to increase nutrition and provide income

    • Fast-growing trees to be limbed, not cut, to be used for charcoal

  • Local demonstration plots exemplify how to plant and care for trees

  • Instructional tree planting events are attended by adults and children for practical experience

  • GHF agrotechnicians provide ongoing assistance in caring for newly planted trees so community members are supported in their agricultural efforts
