The mature forests that once covered Haiti anchored the soil, provided shade protection, encouraged precipitation, and sequestered carbon in the soil. Not to mention the biodiversity of much of Haiti that has been damaged or destroyed in mere decades. As agricultural practices diminish, trees are being cut for charcoal production and lumber for construction. Instead of being composted, the remaining vegetation is burnt.
